A Short New Zealand History
The Polynesians were thought to have settled in New Zealand around 1000 AD. In 1642 the first European, Abel Tasman encounters New Zealand. A centaury later Captain James Cook charts New Zealand. Fifity years later the Treaty of Watiangi is signed between the British and Maori (indiginous people of New Zealand). After this Europeans began to settle in New Zealand.
New Zealand is now a independent country within the commonwealth. Depsite the fact that the Queen is formally head of state she plays no real role in Goverment.
